✔ Guideline 1: The reader is always right.
This guideline is deliberately overstated to draw your attention to it because it is the most important one in the redrafting process. If an educated reader does not understand one of your points, the communication process has not worked. Therefore, you should almost always seriously consider changing the draft to make it clearer for the reader. It will usually be counterproductive to defend the draft manuscript. Instead, you should try to determine why the reader did not understand it. Did you err in your analysis? Did you provide insufficient background information? Would the addition of more explicit transitions between sections make it clearer? These questions, and others like these, should guide your discussions with readers of your manuscript whom you chose to provide you with feedback.
